I was super-impressed by the wines I tasted at Brave & Maiden, a new project taking shape in Santa Ynez. Managing Director Jason Djang has put together an all-star team. Joshua Klapper makes the wines, while Paul Hobbs is the consulting winemaker. Ruben Solorzano and Jeff Newton look after the vineyards. Brave & Maiden makes two ranges: the black label series (reviewed here) and the white labels, a set of lower-priced wines designed for broader distribution. Brave & Maiden's 2014s are impressive. The 2015s, from a challenging year in which yields are down 30-50% across the board, are shaping up to be even better. Brave & Maiden has certainly made a splash with its debut. Even so, my sense is that the best is still to come.
