Winemaker Emeritus Ed Sbragia compares 2002 to 1992 and 1991. The somewhat cooler growing season of 2003 was more like 1995, he adds. This was a sentiment I heard more than a few times during my tour of the North Coast, and this is one reason I believe that many of the 2003s may not only provide pleasant surprises down the road but may also outlive the 2004s and 2002s. Sbragia doesn't believe in racking cabernet: the wines go into their "ultimate" barrels in January after the harvest and generally remain there, getting only a monthly topping-up, until they are bottled a full two years later.

As Beringer typically bottles their big reds 30 months or so after the vintage, and then holds them a while before releasing them, I focused this year on the finished 2001s, which are in the market now or will be soon.Winemaker Emeritus Ed Sbragia continues to be very much involved in Beringer's reserve program, but winemaker Laurie Cook has taken over responsibility for sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and merlot.
