Morgan Peterson continues to put out a bevy of superb, site-driven wines, many of them focused on the old-vine, heritage sites he and a small cadre of fellow producers have brought back from the brink of extinction. When I taste the Bedrock wines I often get the impression they will age very well, despite their considerable near-term appeal.

Steep hillside vineyards that could drain quickly proved their worth after the early October rains of 2011, Morgan Twain-Peterson told me, "and so did old-vine, dry-farmed vineyards with deep root systems."As there was meager rainfall from July until the October downpours, he continued, "unirrigated vineyards were better equipped to handle the sudden moisture spike than places that had been fed water during the summer."Morgan calls 2011 a vintage of poise and balance, "not brute force," and likens many of the wines to "old-school California, with flavor but not massiveness," but he laments the pathetic yields brought on by "disastrous" flowering.Like many of his colleagues Morgan de-classified some serious fruit "because there just wasn't enough to justify single-vineyard bottling.Hence, all of his Hudson and Alder Springs syrah has been bended into a North Coast bottling, which is an excellent wine, by the way.
