The 2016s from Bernardino Sani at Argiano are a gorgeous expression of the vintage and house style, as well as a terrific follow-up to the 2015s I tasted earlier this year. Located in Sant’Angelo in Colle, many consumers still associated the name Argiano with the internationally-styled Super Tuscans fashioned by Giacomo Tachis in the late nineties - but they are mistaken in doing so. Bernardino has brought an entirely new focus on Brunello back to the estate, placing the single-vineyard Vigna del Suolo at the top of his quality pyramid. That said, don’t make the mistake of missing out on the house Brunello either, which bridges the gap between traditional and modern styles. Going back to the 2015 vintage, however, the only part of my tastings of the new releases at this estate that didn’t thrill me was the 2015 Riserva, tasted twice, where the extended élevage seems to have robbed the wine of some of its fruit. Hopefully, time will prove me wrong.
