Castello della Sala, the Antinori-owned estate in Umbria, is managed by Renzo Cotarella. Cervaro della Sala continues to be one of Italy’s most dependable Chardonnay-based whites, and probably the property’s best known wine. The portfolio, however, includes some serious gems at excellent prices like the Bramìto della Sala, which is also a Chardonnay made in a fresher style and really very pretty in the 2020 vintage. The San Giovanni della Sala (Grechetto, Procanico, Pinot Bianco and Viognier) and the Conte della Vipera (Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon) are two zesty yet characterful whites that overdeliver for their price points. For dessert wine fans, the Muffato della Sala is simply stunning. Frankly, if there’s one wine that lags behind here, it’s the Pinot Nero della Sala, which in this report is also from the more difficult 2018 vintage. Castello della Sala does a good job of keeping Umbria, beyond Montefalco, on the minds of wine lovers around the world.
