Whereas some of his neighbors in Barbaresco think of 2006 as a powerful vintage, Angelo Rocca believes it leans toward elegance, and he compares it to 2004 and 2001. "The 2006s are fresh wines and though they'll last a long time they are already drinking beautifully." Rocca added that 2007 was a somewhat warmer year but he finds more similarities than differences between '07 and '06. In the course of our tasting, he compared 2007 to 2000 (a comment echoed by Bruno Giacosa). Moscato lovers should keep an eye out for Rocca's superb 2008 version of Moscato d'Asti, from a vineyard owned by his son-in-law. This wine is wonderfully reserved and minerally for the category and much too easy to drink. Prorprietor Angelo Rocca makes some of the richest Barbarescos in town, but even he couldn't overcome the challenges of the 2006 vintage. His Barbarescos show excellent integrity of fruit and a refined use of oak, even if they don't quite reach the level of his finest wines.
