Steffen Christmann is the current president of the VDP, Germany's Union des Grands Crus. A soft-spoken but very serious gentleman, he would prefer that his wines speak for themselves. As 2009 was the first year in which he released a full range of wines from 100% biodynamic vineyards, their accent has changed. Although a number of my colleagues went wild over the quality of his finest rieslings at the first official presentations of Grosses Gewachs in Wiesbaden and Berlin, Christmann's 2009s were one of the most difficult vintages I have ever tasted in its youth. Given that I was very impressed by the simple Konigsbach village wine, I suspect that my scores for his top single-vineyard rieslings will prove to be too low. Also recommended: 2009 Ruppertsberger Linsenbusch (85), 2009 Gimmeldinger Biengarten Riesling Trocken (87), 2009 Konigsbacher Olberg Riesling Trocken (87), 2009 Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad Riesling Grosses Gewachs (88+?), 2009 Konigsbacher Idig Riesling Eiswein (94). Other wines tasted: 2009 Riesling Trocken, 2009 Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten Riesling Trocken.
