Steffen Christmann, the current president of Germany's VDP, something akin to Bordeaux' Union des Grands Crus, is a proponent of biodynamic farming. Two thousand nine was the first vintage he released with all vineyards certified. Not surprisingly, the wines have evolved in style over the past few years, tending to be less expressive in their youth but maturing nicely with age. Although an austere vintage, 2010 was both far more expressive and impressive than 2009. The finest selection of young wines that I have tasted here recently, the Idig is one of the finest dry rieslings of the vintage. More important for the consumer is the fact that even the simplest wines are very good, and the pinot noirs are also beginning to sport a French accent.
