This is a drop-dead gorgeous set of Pinots from proprietors Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Marie Welsh. I first tasted the Rivers-Marie wines in 2008 during a visit to Outpost and was hooked right away. The Rivers-Marie Pinots stand out for their purity of fruit and sheer expressiveness. Thomas Brown is probably best known to readers for the wines he makes for his consulting clients, which include Outpost, Schrader, Maybach and a handful of others. His own wines are every bit as compelling. When it comes to Pinot, Brown favors whole berry, native fermentations, with no sulfur additions. In 2012, Brown used whole clusters on just a few wines, but the percentages are low across the board. Malos were done in March, at which time the wines were racked and sulfured. The 2012 Pinots were bottled in August 2013, unfined and unfiltered. Stylistically, the Rivers-Marie wines occupy a middle ground within the context of Sonoma and Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. In 2012, there are two Chardonnays, a Sonoma Coast bottling meant to accompany the Sonoma Coast Pinot, and the Thieriot. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to taste the Chardonnays, but they won't be released until later in the year. We will post notes as soon as I have a chance to see those wines.
