Dalla Valle has long been one of Napa Valley's top estates, but there is a different and more energetic vibe these days, now that Maya Dalla Valle has joined her mother, Naoko, and long time consultant Andy Erickson at the winery. The bottled 2016s are just as captivating as I thought they would be. I was also impressed by the 2017s I tasted. Even so, I could not help get the very strong feeling that the best is yet to come as Dalla Valle enters its second generation. As fine as the top wines are, I admit I have a soft spot for the Collina Dalla Valle, the estate's entry-level wine, and one of the finest values in Napa Valley.

Dalla Valle is one of the few original Napa Valley cult wineries that appears to be set for its second generation of family ownership. Maya Dalla Valle is now working alongside her mother, Naoko, and their longtime winemaker Andy Erickson at the estate. The new winery and tasting room might seem modest by Napa Valley standards, but the facility is quite functional and was built in record time by Napa standards, which shows the Dalla Valles know how to get things done. The 2015s are rich, racy wines, which is to say very much in the style of the year. As good as those wines are, the 2016s are shaping up to be better. Even after all these years, Dalla Valle remains at the top of the pack.
