Dalla Valle's Maya is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wines. This complete vertical back to the inaugural 1988 is a poignant reminder of just how trailblazing Maya was back in the 1980s and 1990s. At the same time, though, Maya is timeless and enduring in its beauty.

Naoko Dalla Valle and her husband Gustav purchased their estate in 1982. The sunny, well-exposed property reminded Gustav Dalla Valle of his native Italy. Dalle Valle is located about mid-slope on the eastern side of Oakville in what is now recognized as one of the pockets of true excellence within Napa Valley. Pedregal, Weitz, Backus, Peter Michael’s Au Paradis and Oakville Terrace are some of the sites that surround Dalla Valle. Sadly, Gustav Dalla Valle passed away in 1995, but he left behind a rich legacy that even he probably could not have envisaged. Today, the winery is run by Naoko Dalla Valle with the assistance of Winemaker Andy Erickson.

Through the long replanting process here, the Maya blend will be kept at 55% cabernet sauvignon and 45% cabernet franc. Because the 2000 and 2001 vintages were made entirely from the estate's older plantings, production was low; a bit of the replanted cabernet franc will be included in the 2002, with the new cabernet sauvignon scheduled to make it into the final blend with the 2006 vintage. Due to its sizable cabernet franc component, the Maya can be rather folded in on itself in barrel. In one year, though, the 2001 Maya will be showier than the Napa Valley bottling," noted winemaker Mia Klein, "but not today."

There are just 440 cases of the superb 1999 Maya bottling, as half of these vines have had to be replanted due to oak roll fungus. I was disappointed to learn that 2000 will be the last vintage for Dalla Valle's sangiovese; the vines were pulled out in '97 and replanted to cabernet sauvignon the following year. Dalla Valle's '98, '99 and '00 sangioveses were made from fruit purchased from a property next door.
