"It was a vintage that was all about selection, in the vines and at the sorting table," Yann Abielle and Pierre Fabre said of the 2011 vintage."There was no way that you could make a really good wine if you let nature dictate the yields."As the 2010s age, Fabre thinks that "the minerality of the vintage will come through. You don't notice it right now because of all the fruit and the tannins, but it's there and it will help to make the wines age a really long time.To make the point of how well Chateauneuf can age we tasted a pristine bottle of 1961 Mont-Redon, which was, indeed, still fresh and intensely fruity, with a finish that refused to let up.I wish that more people had the chance to experience great Chateauneuf at this age and hope that they'll allow their 2005s and 2010s to slumber peacefully because I suspect that the best versions will age at least as gracefully as this '61.There was also a 1978 on the table and while fully mature, with smoky, floral and dried cherry character, it still has years of life left in it.We also opened bottles of the most recent vintages, with the 2009 showing a ripe, decadent dark fruit liqueur quality that reminded me of 2007, or even 2003.The 2007, in fact, was surprisingly lithe, even elegant, with intense red fruit liqueur and floral character and a long, sappy finish. The lithe, open-knit 2008 drinks very well now, with a bright red fruit character that calls to mind a ripe New World pinot noir.It has the acidity to age but I suspect that it will be showing its best over the next few years, while its at its most vibrant.
