Piero Palmucci of Poggio di Sotto spent years researching soil types and microclimates that were best suited to Sangiovese Grosso, seeking out expert opinions, as well as befriending locals to help find the absolute best parcels. This search led him to Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the southern part of Montalcino, and just outside of the town, where he established Poggio di Sotto in 1989. Next came a study to find the best clones with the University of Milan while researching plant density, pruning and the best practices to bring in perfectly ripe fruit at harvest. With no family of winegrowers to back him or centuries of tradition to teach him, Piero Palmucci created one of the region's most iconic estates. He didn’t always follow the rules, nor did he agree with the idea of darkening or pumping up Brunello with international varieties. Instead, he made honest wines. Looking back, the 2001 gives us a glimpse into Piero Palmucci's vision of what a pure, southern Montalcino Brunello should be.

Elisabetta and Piero Palmucci have turned out a gorgeous Brunello from their holdings in Castelnuovo dell'Abate. Working with low yields and a stringent second selection of only the best fruit at the sorting table, Poggio di Sotto produces wines of rare elegance and subtlety for this part of the zone. The estate pursues a decidedly non-interventionalist approach in the cellar. Only indigenous yeasts are used during vinification, which takes place in a combination of steel and wood vats. The Brunello is aged for nearly four years in 30-hectoliter oak casks prior to being bottled with no fining and/or filtration.”
