Rick Small, a Walla Walla veteran who established his winery in 1981, now has 45 acres of vineyards around his winery located in Lowden, about 12 miles west of the town of Walla Walla. "We're moving higher and also north-facing," he told me this summer, adding that his vineyards, which benefit from a very old basalt flow, are the farthest west and the lowest in the Walla Walla appellation. (He originally had Chardonnay planted on a south-facing slope at low elevation but these wines were too often hit by frost in the spring.)
Small is high on the 2012 vintage, noting that "the larger crop allowed for slower ripening and lower alcohol levels," always constructive in high-desert wine-growing. Small is moving steadily toward organic viticulture.
