Eccentric and with graying hair, Paul Lehrner is an institution in Mittelburgenland. Not only is he a prolific speaker, he also pushes the strong local accent to its limit. More importantly, though, he has focused his efforts on Blaufränkisch, the local cause as a grape variety. “Yeah,” he told me, “I also have 10% Zweigelt, but only because in some of our heavy, loamy soils little else will thrive.”

His son Claus has now decided to become a teacher, which opens questions about the future of the estate. But he's not worried. "The future is tomorrow. Let us worry first about today.”
