Neumayer's wines at their best (and it would not be unfair to point out that 2000 and 2001 rarely reached that level) are transparent and mineral-saturated, vibrant and distinctive.In fact, 2002 is the best vintage here since the exceptional 1997 collection and moves Neumayer close to his avowed goal, to render wines with the depth and interplay of fruit and mineral displayed by the best wines of the Wachau.The effects of millerandage and of warm autumn winds, says Neumayer, should not be underestimated in accounting for the level and type of concentration exhibited this year.Sauvignon, with which Neumayer has often had striking success, was tricky this year, as full ripeness was purchased at the price of disturbingly high alcohol.(Not yet imported) Also recommended: 2002 Der Wein Vom Stein, 2002 Riesling Eiswein.
