For most Austrians, Gernot Heinrich is one of their country's leading red wine producers, given the same accolades and even adoration as Manfred Tement in Styria or Franz Xaver Pichler in the Wachau. He is, however, averse to limelight. He will answer technical questions in a very quiet tone of voice, but never praise his own wines. Fortunately, two of his right-hand men, Harald Lehner and Martin Lichtenberger, were also present when I visited the winery in Gols last August. "Two thousand eleven is the best red wine vintage here in years," they said almost in unison. Gernot Heinrich blushed and nodded. My only criticism of his wines in the past was that they were often a touch too international in style. Zweigelt can soften blaufränkisch, but does not alter its accent in the same way cabernet sauvignon, merlot or syrah do.As he has expanded his vineyard holdings on the Leithaberg and become more confident that he can bring blaufränkisch to perfect ripeness each year, his wines have become purer, have gained in character and have learned a new dialect, as the 2004 Alter Berg readily attests. He has also begun to try his hand at white wines. Beginner's luck? Apparently he also has a green, or shall we say white, thumb. (www.heinrich.at) Also recommended: 2012 Red (85), 2011 Zweigelt (87).
