“Volumes in 2013 were even lower than in 2012, which was already a short crop,” explained Kurt Feiler when I asked him about his yields in recent years. “Two thousand fourteen produced only one-third of a normal harvest.” A member of Respekt, a group of biodynamic producers, since the beginning, he cultivates his 26 hectares of vineyards biodynamically.

Long one of the leadings estates in Rust, Feiler-Artinger was famous principally for their Ausbruch before the scandal in 1985, but that market has yet to recover completely. Now the red wine boom is subsiding as well. “The basic reds are still moving briskly, but there is more pressure at the high end--and the whites are coming back,” he confided. That said, he means the dry whites.

Feiler-Artinger has long been one of the leading estates in Rust, well known as an excellent practitioner of white, red and noble late-harvest wines, a trick not all producers manage with equal aplomb. More importantly, though, their wines are just plain drinkable! Before the scandal in 1985, they were famous principally for Ausbruch, and few today do it better, but that market has yet to recover completely. Since April 2013, son Kurt Feiler has taken the reins, noting that the red wine boom here has subsided. "The whites are coming back," he confided. That said, he means the dry whites. "In any case, we have a bit too much cabernet," he added, but that variety is losing ground almost everywhere in Burgenland. A member of Respekt since the beginning, he cultivates his 26 hectares of vineyards biodynamically. For those of his ilk, the past two vintages have been comparably easy, as both were warm and relatively dry.
