Star sommelier Jeff Lindsay-Thorsen, who founded W. T. Vintners in 2007 with father and son George and George White, makes all of his Syrahs with the Phelps clone, aging the wines for 20 months in neutral barriques. “The only variables are the vineyard sources and the level of stem inclusion,” he told me this summer. He added that he began transitioning to larger barrels with the 2017 vintage and has been picking earlier in recent years “to preserve terroir.” The releases I sampled in July may be the most consistently successful of wines I’ve tasted to date from W. T. Vintners, whose annual production is now close to 2,000 cases.
