The boutique operation of the Arizu family empire is the source of some of Argentina's most distinctive wines, made from the vineyard next to the winery in Lunlunta and another holding in Las Compuertas. The home vineyard, on low-pH soil with some chalk content, is very densely planted (more than 11,000 vines per hectare!), with each vine carrying just two bunches of grapes. The Vina Alicia cabernet and malbec are fermented in oak vats. The most intriguing wines here include Argentina's best (and only) nebbiolo-possibly the most convincing example of this variety that I've tasted outside Piemonte-and the rare Brote Negro, made from an old clone of malbec. These are wines to seek out.
