Delia Viader, who admits that the 1998 growing season was "too up and down," reported that 1999 was steadier and warmer. This vintage produced more complex fruit character than did 2000, she maintains, and the crop level was even lower than that of '98. Viader vines run from east to west, with a canopy at the top. In heat spikes, she says, the tops of the vines may get burned, but the fruit itself is protected. Viader still makes her estate blend in a combination of Taransaud and Seguin-Moreau barrels, noting that the former gives the wine more length while the latter lifts the middle palate.
