Old pro Chris Upchurch, the "founding winemaker" at DeLille Cellars, purchased 18.5 acres of land in 2007 on a small plateau on the southern tip of the Red Mountain AVA with his wife Theadora and planted 17 acres the following year to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Upchurch sells much of this fruit to DeLille, in addition to making his own wines. But he never planted Cabernet Franc here as he "wasn't looking to make another Chaleur Estate wine." His own site has a riper profile, he told me, and is more appropriate for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Upchurch describes the 2017 whites as similar to the '16s, but finds the 2017 reds warmer than their '16 counterparts, noting that there were more shriveled grapes to eliminate in'17. He averred that he might like the 2016 reds more than the '17s.
