Turtle Rock Vineyards, a small project based in Paso Robles’ Tin City (a must-stop for any wine and food lover visiting the area), is the work of Don Burns, who has been working alongside Justin Smith at Saxum since 2008. Production here is tiny, but the quality of the wines is solidly in the upper tier of Paso Robles, especially in recent vintages. Given Burns’ lineage it will come as no surprise that his wines are extroverted and fruit-driven, with serious depth and, usually, solid structure. They are energetic as well, especially in the 2018 and 2019 vintages, which I think are the best wines yet from Burns. Pretty much the only way to get your hands on them is to contact the winery directly. Make sure to ask about their spirits project as well, which is highly intriguing.
