The 2021s at Turtle Rock are a fantastic follow-up to the supremely elegant 2020s. This was the second of a three-year drought cycle, yet cooler than average. As a result, the wines are refined and youthfully poised with a structure that should carry them over the next ten to fifteen years. Winemaker Don Burns again amazed me this year with the combination of power and precision in these wines. This is one of the most exciting lineups being produced in Paso today. Sadly, there isn’t much to go around. Turtle Rock’s total production is around 2,500 cases. Saxum fans may be interested in these wines, as Burns learned his craft working with Justin Smith. While the wines are very different, there’s certainly a common thread here. Make sure also to check out the inaugural edition of Turtle Rocks Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the Willow Creek district. Future bottlings will have a different provenance, yet this wine shows that Burns’ talent reaches far beyond Rhône varieties.
