This venerable négociant house, which was established in 1928, was purchased by famed northern Rhône producer Michel Chapoutier on March 30, 2015. While his team oversaw the bottling of the mostly very good 2014s these 2015s are the first wines to be made (for all intent) from budbreak to bottling under their watch. Chapoutier told me that he doesn’t intend for Trenel to be perceived as “a Chapoutier brand” and, indeed, his family name is nowhere to be found on the wines’ labels. This is a strong set of wines and the 2016s that I tasted in October, 2017 look to be at least as successful as these.
