There is probably nobody in Italy who has as deft a touch with gewurztraminer as Tramin's (Termeno's, in Italian) talented winemaker Willi Sturz. The excellent vineyards located above Termeno in the high-altitude area of Stoll helped a great deal in '06, a vintage that was almost too hot for the variety. While this producer's base gewurztraminer comes across as a little fat and blowsy, the Nussbaumer remains Italy's best example of this variety, and often by a wide margin. The two late-harvest releases are also two of the best sweet wines of Italy. Also recommended: 2006 Sauvignon Montan Alto Adige (85), Pinot Bianco Tauris Alto Adige (86), Pinot Grigio Alto Adige (86), Alto Adige Gewurztraminer Alto Adige (85).
