There is probably nobody in Italy who has as deft a touch with gewurztraminer as Tramin's (Termeno's, in Italian) talented winemaker Willi Sturz. The excellent vineyards located above Termeno in the high-altitude area of Stoll helped a great deal in '06, a vintage that was almost too hot for the variety. While this producer's base gewurztraminer comes across as a little fat and blowsy, the Nussbaumer remains Italy's best example of this variety, and often by a wide margin. The two late-harvest releases are also two of the best sweet wines of Italy. Also recommended: 2006 Sauvignon Montan Alto Adige (85), Pinot Bianco Tauris Alto Adige (86), Pinot Grigio Alto Adige (86), Alto Adige Gewurztraminer Alto Adige (85). The town of Tramin, in the southern part of the zone, is rich in history for it is here that Gewürztraminer was first cultivated. The Tramin estate is another of Alto Adige's high quality cooperatives with its own heritage going back over 100 years. The entry-level wines are aged in stainless-steel and make a great introduction to the wines of Alto Adige at terrific prices. The single-vineyard selections are of course more distinctive, and they too offer outstanding quality for the money.
