This is a terrific set of new releases from proprietors Drew Huffine and Emily Virgil. The 2022 Pinots are impressive. As always, the house style here is focused on energy in the wines, starting with a selection of sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Mendocino County, to farming and then winemaking. The Pinots generally see some stem inclusion and minimal oak impact, with early bottling in July following the vintage. I was also quite impressed with the 2022 Chardonnays (which I tasted from tank prior to bottling), especially in the context of what has turned out to be a variable year in Chardonnay. Huffine and Virgil bulked out 30% of their juice from a low-yielding vintage. In exchange, they were rewarded with a highly promising set of Chardonnays. These are some of the finest wines I have tasted from Trail Marker.
