Scott Hawley was one of many producers in western Paso Robles who told me that he likes the softening effect of stems on the naturally high-acid grapes produced in the region. He also believes that the bright acidity these chalky soils provides, as well as the spiciness contributed by the stems, add an element of energy to the wines that belies their often heady alcohol levels, which often cruise up to and above 16% around here.In addition to his work at his own vineyard, which abuts the Booker vineyard, Hawley is now making the wine for a new project owned by Denver energy exec Don Law called Law Family Vineyards, whose highly promising first releases are also reviewed in this issue. In addition, he continues to consult to Jada Winery, whose wines are also covered in this article.
