Martin Mittelbach took his usual laissez-faire stance toward malolactic, as a consequence of which many but by no means all of his lots from vintage 2014 underwent that transformation. His fine results in this challenging vintage reflect its ability to convey a delightful sense of buoyancy. Interestingly (and with the exception of a lighter-weight Frauenweingarten that had disappeared by the time I visited), the Federspiel and Smaragd bottlings differ only marginally in finished alcohol on either side of the official 12.5% alcohol divide.
