Brian Talley reiterated that cool vintages like 2010 and 2011 favor the style of wines that his family's winery has been producing "since day one."He takes great satisfaction in the fact that the overwhelming trend toward "elegant, balanced" wines in the Central Coast was to no small degree pioneered by Talley, and he loves it when nature plays along with his regular game plan.None of the vineyard-designated 2011 chardonnays was filtered, which Talley said "helps to maintain mouthfeel"; this is especially important in cooler vintages, when grape skins can be on the thinner side, with less phenolic material."

I found much to admire in Brian Talley's 2011 Chardonnays and Pinots. The Chardonnays are all bright, pointed and intensely marked by the year, while the Pinots appear more defined by site. Either way, the wines are drop-dead gorgeous. Proprietor Brian Talley and his winemaker, Eric Johnson, describe 2011 as more consistent for Chardonnay than Pinot, which experienced a very poor set. Talley fans will also want to check out the entry-level Bishop's Peak wines, which are reviewed separately in this issue.
