The team at this Benedictine property famous for one of Austria’s most dramatically beautiful and extravagant monasteries, perched high over the Danube opposite Krems, is the same as at Weingut Stadt Krems. Results have not yet attained the latter winery’s consistency or outstanding quality/price rapport, but they seem to be headed in that direction, as the estate has performed strongly in 2012, 2013 and even 2014, with wines from the latter two vintages displaying increasing expressiveness over time in bottle.
Director Fritz Miesbauer has been gradually lowering the levels of sulfur at bottling in an effort to achieve greater youthful expressiveness, textural nuance and digestibility. This estate incorporates a bit of Pinot Noir that has featured in sparkling and still rosé wines as well as in a few tentative batches of red, but I have confined my two most recent tasting sessions to Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Picking began here in 2013 at the beginning of October, but the Grüner Veltliner harvest wasn’t completed until the first days of November, at which point the Riesling harvest commenced, continuing until the middle of that month.
