A large cooperative with holdings over a wide swath of central Sudtirol, St. Michael produces wines at several tiers of quality, with the top bottlings coming from a single vineyard site called Sanct Valentin. Winemaker Hans Terzer vinifies most of the whites in stainless steel, with a percentage of large casks and barriques used for a few wines. The signature grape for this cooperative is pinot bianco, which appears in three different versions, one of which is reviewed here, but there is no question that the limited production of wines under the Sanct Valentin aegis is what makes this winery noteworthy.(Martin Scott Wines, Lake Success NY
