Mike Sinor and Cheri Lavallee’s Bassi vineyard, which they purchased in 2013, is a highly regarded source for cool-climate Pinot Noir, but it is also proving to be a great site for tense and elegant style Syrah. The San Luis Obispo Coast holds great promise for the variety based on the examples that I am increasingly seeing, and the best versions, such as here, can stand among the top, savory-leaning renditions that I have encountered from the New World. As for the Pinots, there’s little to suggest that these 2017s came from a hot vintage, although it should be noted that regardless of vintage, this area tends to stay quite cool thanks to the strong coastal influence. These wines are not easy to find because of their small production and high local and mailing list demand.
