Production of Siduri and Novy Family wines "has grown way, way faster and bigger than we ever imagined," Adam Lee told me as we walked through his sprawling facility in Santa Rosa.Over two dozen Siduri wines are made now from vineyards in California and Oregon and production now crests over 10,000 cases in a typical vintage.Comparing 2010 to 2011 Lee said that "overall 2010 was actually cooler than '11 but the heat spikes at the end of August and in September made the fruit completely different. In '11 it was just constantly cool, without any bursts of heat."A brutal selection process meant that the Lees sold off wine in bulk and "lots of expensive fruit went into the appellation bottlings."He summed up the 2011 harvest as falling into "three broad categories: picked before the rain, picked after the rain, and picked before the rain but only because rain was in the forecast."And he noted that pinot noir harvesting fell into all three categories, "so it's impossible to generalize about the vintage for pinot."
