After focusing almost exclusively on red wines with his work at Kosta-Browne, his own Shane label and with Spell (now being overseen by Andrew Berge, who is assistant winemaker at Chasseur), Shane Finley has begun venturing into white wines. He's starting with a 2010 grenache blanc here that looks very promising and there's now a chardonnay under the Kosta-Browne label. Finley told me that he was looking forward to playing around with white grapes as he spent a lot of time with viognier, marsanne and roussanne while working with Pierre Gaillard in the northern Rhone Valley and with chardonnay while he was assistant winemaker at Paul Hobbs. The syrahs here are quite impressive in 2009 and show the influence of the whole-cluster work that fascinates him.
