At Domaine Schoffit, the family started to move over to biodynamic agriculture two or three years ago. Young Alexandre Schoffit likes the 2016 wines because he finds them fresh and food-friendly; unlike cool years, when the wines are only about freshness and really not much else, he finds that in 2016 there is quite a bit of fruit concentration to go along with all the freshness. His only regret with the 2016 vintage is that he had a low production volume (especially compared to other Alsace producers); this was partly a consequence of the domaine’s high proportion of very old vines (the youngest vines at Domaine Schoffit are 35 years old, while the average age is more than 50). Not surprisingly, he harvested later than in 2015 (between September 20 and November 3 in 2016, versus September 7-October 22 in 2015).
