The Schiavenza wines continue to improve, which is great to see, as the Alessandria family owns land in some of Serralunga's top sites. The 2016s spent 20-25 days on the skins, in cement, followed by aging in Slavonian oak of 26-35HL. One of the developments at Schiavenza has been a reduction of the time in oak to 30 months from 36-38, which had previously been the norm, a shift that preserves freshness while avoiding some of the harsh contours of years past. Schiavenza is without question an estate to watch.
