I continue to be impressed with San Felice, an estate that has been a work in progress for some years following a significant replanting. As the vines are getting older, the wines are also becoming more interesting and complex. This year, San Felice has a new wine for the recently introduced Gran Selezione designation, a Riserva version of the popular Il Grigio that incorporates rediscovered native red grapes. San Felice does not use the Gran Selezione for their top Chianti Classico, but the estate is not alone in that choice. The top 2010s have developed nicely in bottle, although the 2011s are deeply marked by the hot year, always a challenge here, in the southern tip of the Chianti Classico appellation. All things considered, though, this is a solid set of new releases from San Felice and the team headed by Oenologist Leonardo Bellaccini and Agronomist Roberta Pugliese.
