If I had to name one darkhorse estate in Santa Barbara County that could soon make the leap into the upper echelon, it would be Riverbench. The oldest portions of this property in Santa Maria were planted in 1973. Today, the wines are made in a forward, supple, middle of the road style that is likely to appeal to a wide range of palates. But the wines feel a little safe and as if they are made with an aversion to risk taking. To be fair, there is nothing wrong with that, but my impression is that there is a lot of untapped potential.
