The 2005 vintage smiled on the new winemaker Wolfgang Mertes, who was particularly successful with the wines from the Scharzhofberg. The dry rieslings were excellent and the kabinetts enticing. If the rest of the wines continue to improve at this rate, this estate will merit more serious attention. Von Kesselstatt is by far the best among the large estates, with first-class vineyards on the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer, and appears to have a clear idea of where it wants to go. (Valckenberg International, Tulsa, OK) Also recommended: 2005 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese Trocken Grosses Gewachs (88), 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Trocken Grosses Gewachs (89+?), 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett (86), 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Erste Lage (88+?).
