Carroll Kemp told me that while 2012 might be a stronger, or at least more consistent, vintage overall than 2011, he considers the highlights from the earlier year to be better than those of 2012. That's chiefly due to the natural concentration caused by the low yields, he explained, adding that "to attain concentration in 2012 you had to do it by crop-thinning, and you had to do it a lot."

Red Car proprietor Carroll Kemp is a little more realistic about the 2012 vintage than many of his colleagues. According to Kemp, the high cluster weights caught growers a bit by surprise. I found much to admire in the wines I tasted, especially the 2012 Pinot Noirs, a number of which are truly outstanding. Kemp's preference is to pick earlier rather than later. These are generally mid-weight wines built more on acidity and structure than overt fruit. Unfortunately there were a few 2012s I was not able to taste, including the 2012 Pinot Noir Doc's Ranch and Zephyr Farms, which were not in bottle, and the Ritchie and Zephyr Farms Chardonnays, which weren't finished fermenting! Overall, this is a very strong showing from a young winery that continues to grow.
