Rainer Wess reported a challengingly wet early season and a harvest that required considerable selectivity and in certain instances involved picking Riesling ahead of Grüner Veltliner so as to forestall negative botrytis influence. And in the resulting collection, Grüner Veltliner indeed came out well ahead of Riesling, the latter proving disappointing given what is possible at this address. Wess did not follow up his inaugural Roter Veltliner bottling from vintage 2015 with a vintage 2016 successor, and at the time when I tasted his other 2016s was not yet ready to present the successor to his vintage 2015 Neuburger. (For details concerning this estate, consult the introduction to my report on its 2013s and an update that accompanies my notes on its 2014s.)
