Two thousand-fourteen marks the first release of Quintodecimo’s Taurasi Riserva Grand Cru Luigi Moio. These vines surrounding the winery in Mirabella Eclano were originally used as an addition to the Terra d'Eclano bottling. However, Professor Moio intended to utilize them for his new Grand Cru bottling once they came to age. Fruit is obtained through three hand harvests of only the best berries at optimal ripeness. The wine is refined for two years in new French oak, followed by another two years in bottle. The 2019 embodies the Quintodecimo style, hovering between the elegance of Burgundy and the power of Bordeaux, with all the animalistic qualities of Aglianico. While the three vineyards that contribute to Moio’s portfolio of Taurasis are all within easy walking distance of one another, each shows the remarkably unique character of its distinct terroir. Even without adding the fruit that goes into the Grand Cru, the Terra d'Eclano continues to impress. As for the whites, the 2023s are limited in production because of the onset of downy mildew during the season. The wines are spectacular, yet production is down between 20-25%. Professor Luigi Moio is one of the most passionate yet science-based producers in the region. He accepts nothing but the highest quality, from his vineyards to his winemaking and even the packaging. Quintodecimo is, without a doubt, a First Growth of Taurasi.
