David O'Reilly, whose first vintage under his Owen Roe label was 1999, has planted an additional 21 acres at his rocky, windy Union Gap Estate in Yakima Valley over the last seven years, and some of this new fruit (including head-pruned Mourvèdre, Grenache and a bit of Syrah) will be coming on line in 2016. The young vines here are trained on metal rebar because that's the only material he was able to pound into the rocks without shattering it.
O'Reilly told me that 2014 was less of a challenge than 2013, as the high temperatures were less extreme, but it was still necessary to harvest early. He started picking his Chardonnay on August 28, the earliest ever, until this year. O'Reilly maintains that Red Willow is a misunderstood vineyard. It's situated farther west than his standby DuBrul and features cooler days but warmer nights. With less diurnal variation than Red Mountain, for example, he picks early here. O'Reilly added that 2012 provided "tremendous growing conditions, totally average growing conditions: we love average."
