I last met with Franz Proidl at the June 2016 VieVinum, where I was able to taste only a very small subset of his 2015s. Proidl started picking in mid-September 2015; given the ripe fruit flavors that dominated those wines I tasted, as well as their sense of breadth and softness, it appears not to have been a moment too soon. But I’ll plan to supplement this brief treatment of Proidl 2015s when I next report on Austrian Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. I’m happy to say that the several 2014s I was able to re-taste in the course of 2016 performed on the upper side of the ratings I projected when I reviewed them before bottling. (For details concerning this estate’s vineyards, practices and recent history, readers are invited to consult the extended introduction to my report on its 2013s.)
