These are two pretty wines from Pio Cesare, especially within the context of the 2012 vintage. As has been the case now for several years, the straight bottlings of Barbaresco (and Barolo too) are intriguing for their more classically-leaning style, greater availability and more favorable pricing vis-a-vis the single-vineyard wines. One of the signatures of the Pio Cesare Barbarescos is that they spend more time in oak than is common these days, which means the wines are released at least a year later than most and are also pretty much ready to drink upon release, or, in the case of the most structured vintages, with only minimal cellaring.
