One of the great under-sung producers in the northern Rhône, Pierre-Jean Villa has been steadily increasing the quality of his wines since departing Les Vins de Vienne, where he was a partner and chief winemaker from 2003 until 2009. His wines show complex bouquets and a lot of forward fruit and rounded texture straight out of the blocks, especially in 2017. Villa’s 2016s might be the best set of wines that I have ever tasted from him, and their balance will help them enjoy long, graceful aging curves.
