Peter Bernhard Kühn remembers 2023 as “pleasant.” He comments that the not-too-early budburst, the benefit of winter precipitation, good flowering and vegetation helped along in the summer with soft, gentle rain,” making dry stress impossible. When August rains arrived, there was some worry that grapes were tightly packed on the bunches. For him, the relief of rain after the very dry 2022 outweighed the worry. This, nonetheless, led to split grapes and rot and losses. The steep sites did better than the deeper soils. In the vineyard, they “worked towards” selecting nobly sweet wines, but much selection yielded just 23 liters of Auslese, which will not be commercialized and will remain a family reserve. In the 2023 collection, the creamy, herb-scented house style is on full display but with additional verve and juiciness. Kühn also shows new wines from newly leased parcels in the Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck and Berg Schlossberg; the former is from Schloss Löwenstein, the latter from Kloster Eberbach, and a parcel is in the Rauenthaler Baiken.
