Knights Valley is one of the most fascinating regions in northern California. The AVA lies just north of Calistoga and is nestled between Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill and Fountaingrove in a corner of Sonoma County that feels quite remote and pastoral. Knights Valley excels with red and white Bordeaux varieties. The reds are marked by distinctive savory and mineral notes that, at times, recall the great wines of Pessac-Léognan. Luc and Jodie Morlet’s Cabernet Sauvignon Mon Chevalier is a terrific example of what Knights Valley has to offer. This retrospective back to the inaugural 2007 provided a fascinating opportunity to see how the wine ages.

Luc and Jodie Morlet’s 2011s are super-impressive. The wines are flashy when young, but that doesn’t mean they can’t also age beautifully, as this recent tasting made abundantly clear.

Luc and Jodie Morlet completed their new winery off Highway 29 north of St. Helena in early 2012, in time to vinify the 2012 vintage.Luc described '12 as "an ideal season:a bit like 2005."He practiced what he described as "progressive crop thinning," starting early and further reducing the vine loads around the time of the veraison."The 2012s can be hollow in the middle where yields were not controlled," he noted.The 2012 pinots here finished bone-dry--under one gram per liter in residual sugar--whereas Morlet's 2011s were generally close to two grams.Incidentally, he compares the young 2013s to the 2001s:"classic, not hedonistic."

Luc and Jodie Morlet's 2010s are off the charts. The 2010s have huge structure, but the fruit is so ripe and voluptuous in these wines that the perception of tannin is often imperceptible. The 2009s, on the other hand, are made from grapes that weren't as physiologically ripe, so the tannins remain firm and in need of time in bottle to soften. As good as the Morlet range is, the most exciting wine appears to be the Morlet Estate, from a vineyard in St. Helena the Morlets purchased a few years ago.
